NPE Orlando: Mahlo web gauging systems are in demand

Machine builder is pleased outcomes of NPE show

The National Plastics Exposition in Orlando, NPE in short, is one of the three most important trade fairs for plastics worldwide. 2018 was the biggest show so far with a constant stream of eager visitors. One could see this also at the booth of Mahlo America Inc. Their Qualiscan QMS system for on-line web gauging caught the eye of many industry experts.

From far away people could see the red Mahlo sign in the huge venue that points visitors the way to the German machine builder’s stand, a popular spot for the audience, as it seemed. “Mahlo has made a name for itself in the plastics industry”, says Alan Lavore, Executive Vice President of Mahlo America Inc. Proof for this is the constant stream of interested visitors that were looking for advice or information on the many solutions Mahlo provides. To satisfy all prospects, not only the Mahlo America Team with Lavore, Technical Sales Manager Eric Reber and Area Salesman David Jillson were on site but also the US Field Sales Agents, the CEO of parent company Mahlo GmbH Rainer Mestermann and the Representative of the China subsidiary Frank Fei. This way, the machine builder reacts to a growing and more international audience.

“Of course, American clients still count for about 80 per cent of visitors but we also got in contact with
prospects from Asia and South America over the last five days.” This year, the trade show again welcomed over 65,000 visitors and 2,100 exhibitors, who wanted to hear everything about the latest developments from a growing leader in web gauging. This year’s motto of NPE “We’ve got it covered” was a perfect fit for Mahlo. After all, the web gauging system Qualiscan with its various sensors and scanners covers almost every application from coating to calendering and extrusion.

No matter if it is basis weight, thickness, density or moisture, these parameters can be identified quickly and reliably with Mahlo systems. Running on sturdy frames available in various sizes, the sensors are traversing constantly across the entire working width to measure, log and control the required web properties. Depending on application and product, beta-, x-ray- or infrared sensors are used. “We have scanners that can host up to five sensors”, Reber explains. At NPE, the InfraScope  NIR was on display. It measures the absorption of infrared energy and determines basis weight and moisture at the same time.

Due to very high spectral resolution, the sensor can distinguish between components with nearly similar IR absorption. This capability allows the highly selective individual measurement of a specific component or layer in the web without interference from other components.

The main goal of the Mahlo team is always to put together exactly that kind of system for a client that he needs. That way, he can realize significant savings in energy, raw material and money by increasing the product quality which elevates him above his competitors.
