On precise sensor technology for nonwovens
Let’s ask… Matthias Wulbeck
In the dynamic world of nonwovens, it is more important than ever to precisely maintain quality characteristics and optimise production processes. At this year's Hof Nonwovens Days, our QCS Product Manager Matthias Wulbeck took a closer look at these topics in his presentation "Precise sensor technology for better nonwovens". He provided insights into how Mahlo's advanced measurement solutions help manufacturers to monitor and improve material composition in real time. He also explains this briefly in the following interview.
Matthias, can you give us a brief overview of why precise sensor technology is becoming so important for nonwoven manufacturers?
Nonwovens must correspond exactly to their intended specification (e.g. filter effect, thermal insulation, liquid absorption, etc.). It is important that these functions are achieved with as little raw material input as possible in order to save costs for the manufacturer.
In your speech you gave at the Hofer Vliesstofftage, you mentioned online measurement of material composition. How does this technology help improve the overall quality of nonwoven products?
Not only the total weight and thickness are important, but also the material mix, especially if each component fulfils its own function, e.g. a glass fibre fleece with a binder component.
Nonwovens are used in a variety of industries, from hygiene to automotive. How does Mahlo’s technology adapt to the different material compositions and requirements across these sectors?
Mahlo has a wide range of different sensors that are able to provide material-specific signals. This means that suitable sensors are available for almost all measuring tasks, either individually or in combination. Depending on the task, we use various measurement methods, such as beta or X-ray radiation, infrared or white light interference.
Looking ahead, what trends or innovations do you see shaping the future of the nonwoven industry, especially when it comes to process optimization and quality control?
Rising costs for raw materials and energy, as well as constantly increasing requirements for environmental protection, will also increase the need for online quality control in the future. Thanks to constant further developments and new sensor technologies, Mahlo is an important pioneer and is firmly established in the industry thanks to its many years of experience.
